Puducherry: Puducherry, one of the favourite destinations for New Year celebrations in India, is busy preparing for making the event the most memorable one.

The Union Territory is expecting more tourists this year as New Year celebrations are expected to be a low key affair in Chennai following the death of Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa.

The recent cyclonic storm ‘Vardah’, which rampaged through the coastal parts of northern Tamil Nadu, may also dampen the celebration ‘spirit’. Puducherry gets maximum number of tourists from Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Chennai.

Along with domestic tourists, foreigners also join in the New Year parties on the coastal town. The beach-side parties are something to look out for in Puducherry where firecrackers and bonfires at the beach and celebrations on the streets go on through the night.

Youngsters are in full energy to give a grand welcome to the New Year with electrifying performances. “We are all set to welcome the New Year. Beach promenade party will be an unforgettable experience for tourists,” said Indaya Chandra, a dancer, who is planning to perform with his team on the beach.
Several luxury hotels are planning to illuminate their properties and line up a series of events to attract revellers for the New Year.

However, the cash crunch following demonetisation of higher value notes may affect celebration and flow of tourists this year, say hotel owners.

“We do not have expected booking for Christmas celebrations this year. We hope things will be normal by next week and the hotels are expected to reach full capacity before New Year’s Eve,” said Shenbaga Rajan, President of Chamber of Commerce here. Many of the hotels are yet to come up with their New Year programs, Shenbaga Rajan said.
