Tirupati: Four teenagers, who went fishing near Renigunta in Swarnamukhi River, which was in floods, were washed away on Sunday. One of them was rescued while others are still untraceable.

According to police, Ganesh (15), Yugandhar (14), Dhoni (16) and Likith Sai (15) of G.V. Palem SC Colony in Renigunta mandal had built a boat by themselves. They went fishing in the river on Sunday morning. The four lost their balance while fishing and the boat capsized.

Some locals, who were also fishing, noticed them and jumped into the river. They succeeded in rescuing only Likith Sai, while the other three got washed away. Locals alerted Renigunta police, who have launched search operations.

The rescued teenager told police that none of them were good swimmers and the boat they had built capsized in the middle of the river. He feared he too would have got washed away had he not been rescued.

Panchayatraj minister Peddireddy Ramachandra Reddy, who learnt about the incident, directed police and revenue officials to deploy expert swimmers to trace the missing teenagers.

Parents of the missing children are camping on the bank of the river, hoping to find their kids alive.
