Telangana: Lightning Kills Father-Son Duo, More Rains This Week

HYDERABAD: A father-son duo working at their farm in Khanapur village of Bijinepalli mandal of Nagarkurnool district died on Sunday from burn injuries they suffered in a spell of lightning that accompanied a sudden downpour in the afternoon.

The victims were identified as K. Nagaiah, 55, and his son Ramesh, 25, both residents of Velikonda village.

The two used to cultivate paddy on leased lands and died on the spot when struck by lightning, sources said.

Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicted more rains this week due to a trough running from west Bihar to north Telangana state.

The IMD issued a yellow alert for the state, predicting light to moderate rains with thundershowers at isolated places across most of the districts.

Hyderabad, meanwhile, will experience a partly cloudy sky and receive light to moderate rains or thundershowers towards evening or night, with minimum and maximum temperatures likely to be around 38 degrees Celsius (°C) and 27°C, respectively, accompanied by south-westerly surface winds with a speed of 4-8 kmph.

On Sunday, the city received rain for an hour, with most areas logging a light to moderate spell. Many parts of the city also experienced thunderstorms from late afternoon, bringing the mercury levels down at Hitec City, Gachibowli, Jubilee Hills, Banjara Hills, Tolichowki, Attapur, Charminar and parts of Old City, Malakpet, Kapra, Khairatabad, Secunderabad, Uppal, Sainikpuri, Alwal, Kukatpally, Quthbullapur, Masab Tank, Rajendranagar, Madhapur, Manikonda, Narsingi, Jeedimetla, Osmania University, JNTU and other nearby areas.

The maximum temperature in the state on Sunday was 45°C, recorded at Mahadevpur in Jayashankar-Bhupalpally, followed by Nirmal and Peddapalle, at 44.9°C, and Mancherial, at 44.8°C. In the city, the highest temperature, 41°C, was recorded at Chandanagar, according to the TS Development & Planning Society report.

The IMD also downgraded its heat alert, with only six districts put on orange alert. Adilabad, Mancherial, Komaram Bheem Asifabad, Nizamabad, Nirmal and Peddapelle are expected to clock the maximum temperatures, of 40-44°C, in the state while the other districts were issued a yellow alert, with maximum temperatures to be in the range of 36-40°C, for the next five days.
