VIJAYAWADA: Andhra Pradesh Power Generation Company (AP Genco) has set a record in power generation, supplying 12 per cent more electricity this year compared to last year in the month of May.

Genco MD K.V.N. Chakradhar Babu said it is noteworthy that AP’s generation company, which supplied 33.45 per cent of state's power demand in May last year, met 45.38 per cent of the demand during the same month this year.
He pointed out that by meeting a higher percentage of demand, electricity distribution companies (discoms) have purchased lesser power from private generation companies, thereby saving money for the state exchequer. This would also mean fewer adjustment charges payable by electricity consumers in future.
The MD said Genco’s power generation share would have been more than 50 per cent, had the demand for power in May this year normal like in previous summer seasons.

Giving details, he explained that Nagarjuna Sagar Kudigattu hydroelectric power station generated 287.213 million units during the financial year ending March this year, the highest in the project's 40-year history. He disclosed that the eighth 800 megawatt unit of Dr. NTTPS plant has recently started experimental production. It will be connected to the grid from next month. This will increase the capacity of AP Genco thermal power stations from 5,810 MW to 6,610 MW. The total power generation capacity of AP Genco (thermal, hydel and solar) will increase to 8,789.026 MW.

Chakradhar Babu said Central Electricity Authority (CEA) has given permission to build a 1,350 MW Pumped Storage Plant in Upper Sileru, against the 5,000 MW PSP plan. He pointed out that Odisha Hydro Power Corporation (OHPC) and AP Genco are jointly taking steps to construct three hydropower projects of 98 MW capacity upstream and downstream of the Machkhand project. These projects will not be seasonal like other small hydropower plants. They will generate electricity throughout the year, he stated.
