KOZHIKODE: A mishap was averted on Monday after fire and rescue service personnel put out a blaze that broke out in a shopping complex in Koyilandy. No one was injured in the incident that started at around 11.45 am in the Fayis Building located near the national highway.

Employees working in the shopping complex said the fire started in the Vodafone office in the complex at the ground floor and later spread to the Federal Bank office and ATM. Four fire brigade units from Vadakara and Kozhikode doused the flames after an hour-long operation. Police is yet to trace the cause of the fire, which caused a loss of approximately Rs 50 lakh.

“By 12.45 pm we were able to settle the fire that could have spread to the nearby buildings,” said fire force official Dinesh Kumar. While the Vodafone office was completely destroyed, the ATM and the bank branch also suffered losses.

“A similar incident was reported from a workshop near the national highway few weeks before,” said a shop keeper near Fayis Building. “We have been demanding that the government set up a fire station in Koyilandy as fires have become a perennial threat here.”
