Chennai cops help doctor to return home

Chennai: A series of actions taken by the Chennai Police helped Dr M. Sudheer, a senior professor at MMC, to return home after spending 23 days in a jail in Lucknow, UP where he was lodged after loan sharks from Chennai used their Uttar Pradesh counterparts to trap him.

The doctor reached Chennai on Sunday as he was released from jail only on Saturday though he was granted bail on Thursday. “Only because of Chennai Police help we could secure bail for Professor Sudheer,” noted Dr Stanley Michael, a colleague of professor, who spent a week in Lucknow to help his colleague.

On February 24, Dr Sudheer was arrested from his residence by the UP police in a cheating case filed against him in Lucknow, though he had no dealings with anybody in UP. The UP police action was an off shoot of his borrowing Rs 20 lakh from one M. Kamaraj alias ‘Kanthuvatti Kamaraj’ in 2011.

He had paid back the principal and interest. When he refused to pay more money to Kamaraj and took the case to Saidapet court which asked the police to register FIR against Kamaraj, the lender used his network in UP and handed over blank papers signed by professor to Sarfaraz Ahamed and Piyush Mishra
in UP.

A false cheating case was registered in Aliganj against the professor saying he had collected Rs 1 crore saying he would facilitate government permission for a medical college, police here said. The professor was then arrested and taken to UP.

Chennai Police, based on a representation from doctors’ association, probed the whole incident and found it was ‘Kanthuvatti Kamaraj’ who had conspired with the UP mafia to arrest the professor.

The city police not only arrested Kamaraj, but also gathered evidence and call records details to establish the link between him and Sarfaraz. “Only after we produced the evidence did senior officials in Lucknow police get convinced and helped us to get bail. The UP police also registered case against Sarfaraz and Piyush”, Dr Stanley said.

“The two Sub-Inspectors who came to Chennai and arrested professor were placed under suspension. We were in continuous touch with one ASP named Meenakshi Gupta, who was very helpful”, revealed K. Shankar ACP, Chennai South.
