Hyderabad: Days after the defence ministry ordered the opening of five of the six arterial roads in Secunderabad cantonment, Union minister G. Kishan Reddy thanked defence minister Rajnath Singh for the same.

Richardson Road, Protnee Road, Byam Road, Ammuguda Road and Albain Road are to be opened for civilian traffic.

Kishan Reddy wrote on Twitter that he had recently met Singh on this issue. “He accepted my request & agreed to do it in public interest (sic),” Kishan Reddy Tweeted.

In a statement, Reddy said that he had apprised the defence minister of the situation several times. He also said that threats of stopping water and power supply to the cantonment were counterproductive as they vitiated the atmosphere.

“There is a sensitive balance between security needs and ease of living and the Government of India under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi is always committed to making life of the common person easy,” he added.

SCB CEO Madhukar Naik, told Deccan Chronicle on Saturday that the orders to open roads were yet to be implemented. "We are in talks with the local military authority and the roads will be opened soon. This could take a couple of weeks. At the moment, we are working on a compliance report that we will submit on May 4," he said.

The roads in question have been out of bounds for civilians for close to a decade. Each time a road had to be opened, the state government had to intervene, making it a task to pass through them. Residents eagerly await for the roads to open for ease of traffic flow, which had been a rather pressing issue in the area for a while now.
