Almost 102 years after Canada turned away over 376 migrants, mostly Sikhs hailing from India, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau apologised for the “great injustice”. The then Canadian government had turned turn away 376 migrants onboard the ship Komagata Maru. It returned to India and on its arrival, at least 19 were killed.
Anandiben Patel
The BJP high command is considering replacing Gujarat Chief Minister Anandiben Patel owing to her reported “lack of performance” and “failure” to handle the Patel agitation in the state. South Korean author Han Kang has won the prestigious Man Booker International Prize for her “unforgettably powerful” novel The Vegetarian which deals with a woman’s rejection of human brutality and giving up of eating meat. Kang, 45, beat writers including Nobel laureate Orhan Pamuk to win the 50,000-pound award.
Raghuram Rajan
Stepping up his attack on RBI Governor Raghuram Rajan, BJP MP Subramanian Swamy has urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to sack him immediately, claiming he was mentally not fully Indian and alleging he has wilfully wrecked the economy. Following up on his barb last week that Mr Rajan should be sent back to Chicago, he has written to the Prime Minister saying how a person appointed by the UPA could be continued in the post.
Max Verstappen
Teenager Max Verstappen became Formula One’s youngest winner on Sunday when he took full advantage of a spectacular first lap crash that eliminated both Mercedes cars to claim a memorable triumph in the Spanish Grand Prix.
He became the youngest race winner, at 18 years and 228 days, replacing four-time champion Sebastian Vettel who had also taken that record as a Red Bull driver.
