KHAMMAM: Tension prevailed in 57th division of Khammam Municipal Corporation on Friday as activists of the Congress and the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) clashed with each other over issuing of cheques under Shaadi Mubarak and Kalyanalaxmi schemes. Two Congress workers sustained serious injuries in the incident.

Congress workers raised objections over the issuing of cheques to beneficiaries by the Sthambadri Urban Development Authority chairman B Vijay Kumar and Nagaraju, who was defeated in the same division in the local body elections. Congress workers Abdullah and Anif argued that it was against protocol and Congress corporator should be invited to the programme. It was a government programme and not TRS programme, they argued.

Exchange of words turned serious and both the parties clashed with each other. They hurled stones against each other in the first round. Later, they hit each other with cricket bats. Anif and Abdullah sustained head injuries in the incident.

The 57th division became politically sensitive after Rafida Begum, wife of Mustafa, won the seat as a Congress candidate. Mustafa said at that time it was a win against minister for transport Puvvada Ajay Kumar. The police allegedly troubled Mustafa during the election and he was taken into custody twice.

There is an allegation that the TRS leaders provoked Congress workers during the Kalyanalaxmi cheque issue programme. Mustafa and others lodged complaints in Two Town police station.
