Guntur doctors sew back severed hand

In an emergency surgery, doctors in Guntur have reattached a hand to a person after it was hacked off accidentally.

GUNTUR: In an emergency surgery, doctors in Guntur have reattached a hand to a person after it was hacked off accidentally. G. Ravi of DS Nagar had gone to a saw mill and his hand accidentally touched the running saw. His hand was cut into two parts at the wrist area. The relatives immediately preserved the cut hand and took him to a private hospital where the doctors rejoined the hand by performing surgery.

Addressing a press meet at Guntur, Lalitha Super Specialty Hospital managing director Dr P.V. Raghava Sarma said 34-year-old Ravi worked as a lorry cleaner and went to a wood-cutting shop on July 19 at 6 pm. Accidentally, his left hand got caught in the wood-cutting saw and it chopped his hand into two pieces at wrist. Ravi called his relatives and they preserved the cut hand (palm) and came to their hospital.

The doctors first cleaned the hand and preserved it in the special box. He explained that the doctors first reattached the bones and blood vessels and nerves and finally reattached tendons. He mentioned that vascular surgeon Dr I. Maruthiprasad, orthopedic Dr S.V. Sivaramakrishna, anesthesian Dr B.K. Sahu, doctors Dr Sudha and Dr Anand performed the surgery from 9 pm to 5 am on that day.

He said the patient is able to move four fingers and was facing some difficulty to move the little finger which would be treated. He said that awareness about preserving of cut organ is most important to reattach it and said that the timely preservation of cut hand helped to join the cut hand.
