Scaffolding collapses, 22 injured in Chennai

Chennai: In an unfortunate incident in the city, metal scaffold at an under construction hospital building collapsed injuring immigrant workers, on Saturday night. As many as 22 workers were rescued from the debris and more feared trapped. All the workers are from Bihar.
The incident reminded Chennaiites of the tragedy of Moulivakkam building collapse sent shockwaves across the state but the fire and rescue personnel said that all the trapped workers were rescued. Meanwhile, the rescue operation in full swing at the spot at Govindasamy Nagar on MGR Salai near Perungudi to find out whether more workers are trapped or not.
“The building belongs to a private hospital. Of the rescued workers, 17 were sent to Apollo hospital and 5 were sent to Government Royapettah hospital,” the sources said.
Three were critically injured. The witnesses at the incident said that 9 feet-high concrete plinth was constructed at the site to place a generator.
“The plinth failed to withstand the weight of generator and the shed above it and collapsed. The generator fell on the metal scaffold and the scaffold had fallen on workers,” the witnesses said.
Fire personnel from Thoraipakkam, Guindy and Teynampet rushed to the spot and began the rescue operation. Police personnel from Taramani police station too rushed to the spot and are investigating.
