Opening of Saroornagar lake gates left VV Nagar inundated
HYDERABAD: The unexpected opening of Saroornagar lake gates on Friday flooded homes in VV Nagar Colony, Gaddiannaram division. This area is located in the catchment zone of the lake, and residents had to endure the floodwater and unpleasant smell for hours. Around 20 houses in two lanes of the colony were severely affected.
Corporator Baddam Prem Maheshwar Reddy mentioned that this was the first time such flooding happened in these colonies. They enquired about the reason and discovered that the gates were opened due to heavy inflows. However, the authorities failed to alert the residents before opening the gates, leading to a distressing situation.
Maheshwar Reddy, who lives in the nearby lanes, expressed his frustration, stating that proper communication could have prevented this inconvenience to residents. When the flooding occurred, the residents tried to close the gates temporarily, but it didn't alleviate the situation.
Adding to the problem was the fact that some lanes were already dug up for laying CC roads, which exacerbated the flooding situation. Only after the houses were already marooned did authorities take action to address the issue.
Residents managed to clear the water from the affected lanes, but some areas still remained inundated despite continuous efforts by DRF teams to clear the water.
