TIRUPATI: A newly-married couple from Chandragiri mandal approached the Tirupati district police wing through the Spandana programme, seeking protection from their parents as their parents were enraged over their inter-caste marriage.

According to sources, the newly-wed couple Neeraja and Pawan Kumar of Mallaiahgari Palle village in Chandragiri mandal, who were in love for some time, got married recently in Bengaluru. They both have been working as software engineers there.

On Monday, they approached the superintendent of police P. Parameswara Reddy at his office during the Spandana programme, seeking security. The woman told the police that her parents have lodged a missing complaint at the Chandragiri police station.

Confirming that she has attained marriageable age, Neeraja told police that they had entered into wedlock according to their wishes. However, she said that her parents were enraged over their marriage and accused Pawan Kumar of forcing her to marry him.

Sources said that the SP directed the Chandragiri jurisdiction police to provide security to the couple and probe the matter. They were also asked to counsel the parents of the Neeraja and pacify them saying that she has attained marriageable age and she is free to marry a man of her choice.
