MALAPPURAM: A group of students of Valakkulam in Thennala panchayat will launch an ambulance service on Monday to take care of the needy in the area. It was bought for Rs 4 lakh under the 'Kaniv Home Care' service with the help of the teachers and alumni of the KHM Higher Secondary School at Valakkulam. The palliative care programme was launched in 2014 as a community service of the Junior Red Cross unit in the school.

The JRC volunteers have been providing care and medical help for the people affected by serious illnesses like cancer and permanent disabilities. The students visit them thrice a week accompanied by a nurse from the public health centre, Thennala. "Now the team can reach out to more people in the area with the ambulance which will also be provided to the general public in case of emergencies," said Mr A.P. Mustafa, JRC councillor of the school.

The selected students of the JRC have been provided basic life support training and medical equipment. The public school, with around 2,000 students, has produced its own branded organic rice, 'Kathirmani.' It also runs a weekly market of local products by student groups like the National Green Corps and NSS.
