Vijayawada beautification works damaged

Vijayawada: City beautification works taken up by the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) for Krishna Pushkaralu are in the worst condition now.
The civic body made huge arrangements and spent lots of money to develop greenery and tourist attractions in the city for Krishna Pushkaralu held in August 2016. The VMC developed around five water fountains in the city and tried to bring new shine to the city.
The VMC developed existing water fountains at Benz Circle, Control Room Centre and Indira Gandhi Municipal Stadium (IGM) and other places five months ago to attract tourists.
The civic body upgraded the fountain motors and installed high-quality durable LED lighting system. These fountains attracted citizens for a while. But the civic body failed to maintain them in the long run. Most of the fountains got dilapidated due to the lack of supervision from the VMC.
The fountain at Indira Gandhi Municipal Stadi-um is totally damaged and not functioning. It had become a breeding centre for mosquitoes and rats. Foul smell from the fountain has become a problem to the shop-owners and public at the IGM complex.
Citizens are not happy with the VMC on the maintenance of these fountains.
“The fountain at the municipal stadium is in the worst condition leaving bad smell and mosquitoes. Public money spent on these fountains was wasted,” says J. Karuna, a student from the city. “Negligence of VMC is the main reason for failure of water fountains.
The VMC, which is publicising Sawch Sarvekshan should first focus on maintaining these fountains,” says M. Janardhan, a private employee.
When asked about the bad condition of the fountains, VMC executivce engineer Ch. Danunjaya said that they are making arrangements to restore them before the Republic Day celebrations.
