ALAPPUZHA: In an attempt to put an end to the proliferation of anaerobic waste materials at wedding venues, the district administration has come up with the idea of offering a special certificate for brides and grooms who marry as per a green protocol. District Collector Veena N. Madhavan made this promise as part of the district administration’s effort to honour people who dispose anaerobic garbage in the proper manner. Addressing a meeting of various groups including catering groups, community representatives, hotel and auditorium owners and resident associations the other day, the collector demanded that wedding parties  need to  ensure facilities at the venue to curb wastes.

Anaerobic wastes such as plastic spoons, disposable plates, thermocol sheets, plastic ice crème cups, and plastic water bottles should be completely avoided. The edible items should not be kept in plastic covers and the plastic covering over the basins and dishes have to be avoided.  As part of implementing green protocol, reusable steel plates, ceramic utensils and cups should be made mandatory. The source based waste management system should be implemented if there is wedding which is attended by 50 or more people.

In order to implement zero-waste management concept, it’s important to make use of aerobic materials. The wedding parties will have to henceforth practice recycling methods. To produce compost from degradable wasters, the hotel and auditorium owners should set up aerobic biogas plants. The plastic materials should not be burned in the wedding premises. Boiled water instead of mineral water should be served at wedding venues’, collected instructs
