Puthuvypeen stir: Protesters seek compensation
Protest committee against the LPG plant asks the state government to provide compensation, including medical care to the victims of police action.
KOCHI: The protest committee against the LPG plant at Puthuvypen has asked the government to provide compensation, including free medical care, to the victims of the police action at Puthuvypen and High Court Junction. Mr M.P. Jayaghosh, a leader of the committee, told DC that the police had launched assaults against the people without any provocation and that they have to take the responsibility.
Saying that the committee will continue the agitation, he said the protestors are ready to resume the blockade if the Indian Oil Corporation Ltd (IOCL) and the government attempt to begin the work for the project. “At present we will continue the agitation by the people who assemble in the pandal of the struggle every day,” he said. The objective is to force IOCL to remove the project from this area, he added.
A solidarity committee comprising around 20 different organisations engaged in various mass agitations held a march to the office of the inspector-general of police in Ernakulam on Thursday demanding a judicial probe into the police action against the protestors. Around 200 people joined the march which was inaugurated by Magline Peter. Activists C.R. Neelakandan, Purushan Eloor and several others addressed the march which was stopped near the High Court Junction by the police.
