Kollam steps up efforts to end plastic menace

Kollam: The Kollam city police has become a role model by actively getting involved in the plastic waste management of the City. The Police in association with the students of various schools in Kollam has kicked off a new campaign to collect and dispose plastic waste by setting up collection points in Police stations and various schools in the City. The programme organised by the Kerala Police Association, ‘Social thinking on environmental pollution or STEPS 2017’, with the slogan ‘Let’s unite for earth’ is also intended to spread awareness on the harmful effects of plastic waste.
The programme was inaugurated at the SNDP UP School in Pattathanam here by fisheries minister J. Mercykkutty Amma on Monday. “The effort to make the State plastic free through such a programme is a model to all. This will also help to make the public aware of the possibilities of recycling plastic and on the environmental hazards it poses when discarded in the open,” J. Mercykkutty Amma said after inaugurating the programme presided over by Kollam Mayor V. Rajendrababu. MLA M. Naushad inaugurated the distribution of eco-friendly bags at the programme. City Police Commissioner Dr. S. Satheesh Bino IPS and KPA state president T.S. Baiju were also present.
As part of the programme, as many as 20 collection points will be set up in selected schools and police stations within the City limits where the public can dispose off household plastic waste. The waste collected from these points will be treated by ‘Bilal Industries’ from Mayyanad. Various awareness programmes for both the public and students on the hazards of plastic waste will also be conducted.
