Andhra Pradesh food items, handicrafts await Geographical Indications status

As per the rules, certain documents as proof of origin and other technical processes have to be fulfilled.

Hyderabad: At least nine handicrafts and food stuffs of AP and TS are awaiting a nod from the Geographical Indications Registry at Chennai as the associations and government agencies concerned are yet to submit the technical documents required. While four of the applications were submitted in 2015, the remaining have been pending since 2009.

Adilabad dokra, Allagadda stone carving, Warangal durries and Udayagiri wooden cutlery are being submitted for GI status and are in the examination phase.

Hyderabad Biryani has been pending since 2009. Bandar Laddu and Machilipatnam imitation jewellery too are in the queue along with Dhokra, the name given to tribal ornaments for horses and elephants; birds, animals’ bells and lamps, that is made in the Jainoor and Kerameri mandals of Adilabad.

The Horticulture Development Agency has applied for GI status for Banganapalle mangoes, Andhra Pradesh Handicrafts Development Corporation Limited has applied for toys and other handicrafts. “As per the rules, certain documents as proof of origin and other technical processes have to be fulfilled.
