VISAKHAPATNAM: The family of a brain-dead youth in Srikakulam donated his organs to save the lives of five people across the state on Sunday.

According to reports, Kiran Chand, the lone son of Mallareddy Mohan and Girija Kalyani, had fallen ill while writing his 10th-class examination. He was taken to a private hospital in Srikakulam. Kiran recuperated and started writing his exams again.

However, on April 15, he fell ill again when he was writing his last exam. His parents rushed him to King George Hospital in Visakhapatnam. His parents shifted him to the GEMS Hospital in Srikakulam when his condition deteriorated. Kiran fought for his life for more than a week and went brain-dead.

The boy’s parents and relatives became inconsolable. However, they decided to donate his organs to save the lives of others. Following this, authorities sent one of his kidneys to Apollo Hospital in Visakhapatnam and the other to KIMS Hospital in Visakhapatnam. His heart went to Tirupati and eyes to Red Cross Society in Vizianagaram, Kiran’s family members said.

Though sad, his parents said their child has helped five others lead a better quality of life.
