Coimbatore: PSG college re-launches UG music degree course
Different styles of music to be included in course curriculum which will have maximum student capacity of 50.
Coimbatore: Good news for all the music enthusiasts, from this academic year as the PSG College of Arts and Science has started a three-year undergraduate degree programme in B.A. (Music).
In the course, students will be introduced to vocal as a major and instrumental like keyboard, violin, veena and Bharathanatyam as ancillary subjects, along with other languages like other degree courses. The course will train students from the basic level and prepare them for stage performances.
The head of the department is Vijaya Jaya has 25 years of experience in Carnatic vocal music. The college had this course 15 years ago. “Those days admission may not be attractive. We have been receiving students’ enquiries not only from Coimbatore but also from different states. We are also sending posters to various music clubs in Coimbatore and we are using PSG FM radio to promote this course,” said Dr R. Rajendran, principal of PSG College of Arts and Science.
There are four qualified full-time faculty, one from Chennai, a qualified veena teacher; another teacher is from the college itself who is a qualified Bharatnatyam teacher along with expert teachers to teach different musical instruments.
The course also provides career opportunities in music industries like composing music and directing music too. Students will be taught classical, Hindustani, Carnatic, fusion, western, light and village oriented music styles too.
Apart from a strong foundation of the nuances in Carnatic style, the style can be used for developing innovative ragas or tunes, which could be used for therapy like the DNA Raga, sounds or intonations for stress management and a plethora of lifestyle disorders, which are on a steep increase in the modern world, explained the principal.
The maximum capacity of students is 50. The classes are from 9 am to 3 pm. Admission are open till June 15, the college said.
The college has also commenced a new B.Com course B.Com (CMA). B.Com (Cost and Management Accounting) provides specialized knowledge to evaluate operational efficiency of transnational Indian companies operating from India and abroad.
The curriculum is designed on par with CMA professional course and it provides in depth knowledge in subjects like Cost and Management Accounting, Operations Management, Business Law and Finance and enables the students to acquire skills for taking strategic decision in the Global Business Environment. B.Com (CMA) is for students who want to pursue their career in the field of Cost and Management Accounting.
B.A. (Tamil) is yet another new course started at PSG CAS. This course offers Media Tamil, Journalism in Tamil, Epigraphy, Translational studies, Technical Tamil etc.
