SmartCity Kochi project not later than 2020

Thiruvananthapuram: The second phase of SmartCity Kochi project will be ready in three years and at no cost it will go beyond 2020, its authorities have assured Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan. The fresh assurance came at a maiden meeting of SmartCity Kochi team led by vice-chairman Jaber Bin Hafez with the new Chief Minister here on Thursday.

The team also sought urgent measures, including better road connectivity as well as the extension of Kochi Metro to the project area. They submitted a list of issues to be addressed by the government. A statement quoted Mr Vijayan as saying that the project would be taken forward with the target of generating one lakh jobs.

"As per the agreement, 88 lakh sq ft space need to be constructed, of which 67 lakh sq ft will be for IT and the remaining 21 lakh for other related infrastructure," it said. "Of this, only 6.5 lakh sq ft building was constructed so far. Construction of 60.5 lakh square feet IT building would be completed before 2020 in a time-bound manner," the statement said.
