Kozhikode: Kasaba police on Sunday arrested a student of Zamorin’s Guruvayoorappan College on charges of extortion and attempted murder.  The BA English final year student, Athul Sreeva, was already on non-bailable charges on a High Court order.

The student is currently doing a major role in a popular comedy serial and was debarred from the college due to attendance shortage.

Police said the extortion and physical abuse took place on Friday when a gang the accused belonged to threatened another boy to give money and hit him. Athul, along with two others, approached the second-year student of the same department.

According to police, when the victim refused to give money, the gang forcefully snatched money from his pocket and pushed him down.  Athul, who was wearing a boot, tried to kick him in the head, which he evaded.

In a similar attack, police registered a case against Athul last month and case had been recorded under the non-bailable offence. He was remanded by Judicial First Class magistrate for two weeks.
