Varsity misleads public, say CUK students
The University also do not provide basic facilities including road, furniture etc until the students protested against it, the latter said.
Kasargod: Central University of Kerala (CUK) authorities are misleading the public by issuing press release which contains only half truths and factual errors, alleged the students at the main campus here at Periye. In an open letter in reply to the press release issued by Registrar Dr. A.Radhakrishnan Nair on Friday, the Student Refugee Movement (SRM) leaders said that the movement never called for strike but the students as a whole decided to boycott classes.
“The University which claims giving priority for students' welfare and quality of teaching and academics has hiked the fee by 10% and stopped all merit scholarships. While the Karnataka Central University, which started functioning at the same time as that of the CUK, is providing 100% free hostel facilities for all girl students, here the authorities are hiking the fee. The University also do not provide basic facilities including road, furniture etc until the students protested against it,” the latter said.
“Six months back the students' council members had shared concern over the increased intakeof students into various courses without ensuring proper hostel facilities. However that time the university said that they would take all steps to address such issues. They have failed and are also claiming that the permission has been sought from HRD ministry to get sanction for rented buildings. During the last six months , why have the University not taken any action in that regard until the Kasargod MP intervened and approached the HRD ministry," the letter added.
The students' said that while CUK claims hostel facilities are provided for 47 % of students, it was done by allocating two beds to more than three students. While in Gujarat, the hostel rooms are vacant, in Rajasthan and Tamil Nadu 100 % students are getting hostel facilities. In a village like Periye, it is not possible for students to find private hostels of houses for accommodation. The students also sought the support from public, staff and parents for the protest.
