Garments to carry contact details of makers from January

CHENNAI: Come January 2023, garments and hosiery sold in the retail market will have to display the name, email and phone number of the manufacturer or marketer.

In an amendment made in Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules, 2011, the government brought in a rule that garment or hosiery sold in loose or open at the point of sale should display details of the product in such manner that the consumer can inspect the products before buying,

These details include, name and address of the manufacturer or marketer or brand owner or importer with country of origin.

The consumer care email id and phone number of the manufacturer or marketer should be displayed. It should have internationally recognizable size indicators such as S, M, L, XL, XXL and XXXL along with details in metric notation in terms of cm or m, as the case may be.

Further, the maximum retail price of the package inclusive of all taxes in Indian currency should be displayed.

These details have to  be displayed on e-commerce sites if the product is sold via e-com.

Manufacturers/ packers are advised to display the details from now on.
