VISAKHAPATNAM: Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy virtually inaugurated the country’s third American Corner at Andhra University here on Thursday.
The Corner is located at the AU Principal’s Office Building, University College of Science and Technology in the south campus.
Addressing the participants, Reddy said that the Corner would help youngsters in accessing global knowledge. The American Corner, which is the first in the state and third in the country after Hyderabad and Ahmedabad, would soon emerge as one of the best in the world.
“I hope that this Corner will benefit the people of the state from its resources and strengthen US-India and the US-Andhra Pradesh partnership at the global level in all aspects,” Reddy said.
Andhra University vice-chancellor PVGD Prasad Reddy said that nearly 20,000 people can be trained in an academic year by way of 100 workshops in the three Corners.
The US Consul General Joel Reifman said that the American Corner is a community gathering place that features guest speakers, movie screenings, English language classes, book clubs, advising about US universities, and celebrations of American holidays.
The US Agency for International Development (USAID) mission director Veena Reddy, who hails from Kadapa district, said they were looking forward to launching innovative programmes on climate change and youth outreach to entrepreneurship and women’s empowerment. The active engagement of the Chief Minister stands testimony to the growing relationship between the people and governments of the United States and Andhra Pradesh.
Earlier, the US team visited Water-from-Air Kiosk, which USAID and the Safe Water Network launched in Visakhapatnam on March 23. This novel water supply station was recently recognised as one of the top innovations in the country, Veena Reddy said.
“In my first visit outside of Delhi as USAID Mission Director, it’s been wonderful to learn more about the great work USAID is accomplishing together with our Indian partners in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana,” she said.
