Civic body takes steps to check water stagnation after casualty
The commissioner, accompanied by the engineering wing and civic body staff, on Sunday inspected under bridges
TIRUPATI: Following the death of a newly-wed bride after the car in which she was travelling submerged in stagnated rainwater in the city last week, Tirupati municipal commissioner P.S. Girisha has initiated permanent measures to address the menace of rainwater stagnation.
The commissioner, accompanied by the engineering wing and civic body staff, on Sunday inspected under bridges and spots that are vulnerable to rain and cause severe hardships.
After inspecting the railway underbridge near the West church, Girisha directed the engineering wing to initiate long-term measures on a war-footing to prevent recurrence of such problems. He also directed them to remove the wall alongside the drainage canal that passes from railway under bridge to Rayala Cheruvu and set up an iron railing in place of it.
He inspected the manhole behind the S.V. School campus and instructed officials to reconstruct the retaining wall that had collapsed long back. He inspected various places at S.V. Nagar, West railway station, S.V. University VC bungalow, S.V. campus school and other areas which are plagued by rainwater stagnation.
Besides ordering removal of encroachments to ensure smooth flow of water, he directed officials to form a monitoring committee to keep a strong vigil on spots prone to stagnation.
