Visakhapatnam: Visakhapatnam has witnessed a surge in Covid-19 cases, with a total 10 positive cases reported as of Saturday.

KGH superintendent Ashok Kumar told Deccan Chronicle that out of 21 samples tested on Friday, six have returned positive. Of 24 samples tested on Saturday, four are positive.

However, authorities are yet to confirm whether the virus with which the 10 positive cases have been affected is the new JN1 variant. The blood samples of these patients have been dispatched for genome sequencing. Their results are expected shortly.

Addressing a press conference at the GVMC headquarters, city mayor Golagani Hari Venkata Kumari said there is no need to panic, as all arrangements have been made to deal with the Covid cases, including setting up isolation wards with oxygen beds.

The mayor asked GVMC officials to take up measures, such as bleaching, fogging, and spraying, in addition to the regular cleaning operations by sanitation workers.

Venkata Kumari asked ANMs and Asha to take up intensive surveys at the secretariat level to check cases of fever in every household.

GVMC commissioner Saikanth Varma affirmed that infected individuals are undergoing treatment in home isolation, having undergone the necessary medical tests.

Zone commissioners and AMHOs have been instructed to implement measures to control the spread of Covid-19.
