Thiruvananthapuram: A WhatsApp message to Alappuzha MP K. C. Venugopal  has changed the life of  Amal Saji, a tenth standard student, for ever. He and his poor family members living in a shack at Karuvatta in the district will get a  house under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yogana scheme during the next fiscal year.  Funds have been allocated from the MP fund to lay pipeline to the place for  a length of 150 metres. Karuvatta panchayat will build a bathroom and toilet instead of the makeshift one.

All this happened because of the  action taken by Amal as a last resort to find a solution to his plight. A tenth standard student of  SN Central School, Karuvatta,  Amal was often sent out by his teacher from the  extra class for coming late.  His reason was that  he had to walk kilometres to fetch a bucket of water. He got the MP’s mobile number from a local publication and sent him a message explaining his plight.

The MP who was in a meeting at Kayamkulam  responded to Amal’s message and visited his house three days later where his mother M. G. Manjula, elder brother Aakash,  younger brother Akhil and  his maternal grandparents P. Gopi and Radhamani stay.  Amal had also wanted help for his  cousins, Bharat and Sivani, both Plus-One students whose  mother had died 14 years ago due to  illness.

“We don’t have the panchayat pipe connection at our hut. Before going to the school, we have to walk more than a kilometre to get water. My mother and we were living in a rented home at a different area. Since my grandparents were finding it difficult to take care of my cousins, we decided to move into the shack belonging to my grandfather,”  said Amal who has scored A1 and A2 marks so far in his studies.

Mr  Venugopal has asked  panchayat president C. Sujatha of the  Congress to follow up the matter.  The MP’s office told DC that Amal will get  a house under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yogana scheme. “Already funds have been allocated from the MP fund to lay a pipeline to Amal’s house.  The local panchyat had declared the village ‘Open Defecation Free,’ but   Amal’s shelter was left out,”  said MP’s secretary. The narrow road to Amal’s dwelling will also be widened under Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana scheme.
