Thrissur: The final report from the Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organisation (PESO) on the samples submitted by Thiruvambady and Paramekkavu Devaswoms of the fireworks to be used in Thrissur Pooram will be received within two days, District Collector K. Kowsigan said. He was speaking at the pooram review meeting held at the Collectorate on Monday. “We are hopeful that by avoiding harmful and banned chemicals, the pooram fireworks can be conducted in a grand manner,” he noted.

As per the new directions of the Union Ministry of Commerce, under which PESO operates, the samples were submitted at the PESO office by both the devaswoms last week and from there samples were taken to Nagpur head office of PESO where they are being tested. As per the existing PESO rules, fireworks like amittu, gundu, dynamite (kushimmin) are unauthorised and samples of the same had been given by the devaswoms to PESO. But, the Collector had made it clear earlier that only if such items were authorised by PESO, it would be used for the pooram. Going by the usual dimensions of such heavy fireworks used in the Thrissur Pooram even if the PESO approved them, their dimensions needed to be reduced to meet the maximum decibel limit of 125 units.
