Commercial establishments, garbage collectors to blame

The BBMP has also begun the weekly intensive cleaning at these vulnerable spots where garbage is being dumped illegally, but we do not know how effective this, Ramakanth said.

The issue of garbage disposal has always been plaguing the city because there is no effective system in place. The door-to-door garbage collection has failed due to many reasons.

According to the BBMP, there should be around 5,000 auto tippers assigned for garbage collection, but 3,000 are missing! Where have they gone? Is the money fixed for all the 5,000 tippers still being spent? There is no answer for anything.

The entire dumping on the service roads and isolated spots is happening due to the commercial establishments, who do not want to pay the BBMP for garbage collection. They accumulate the garbage and dump it at these spots and this saves them time and money, and the BBMP has failed to monitor them. Another problem which is visible is that the bulk garbage collectors do not go to the designated spot to dump the garbage. They go to places where there is not much of public movement during night, dump the garbage and leave. At times, we have seen that these bulk collectors in the name of segregation dump the garbage on the sides of the service roads and highways and flee.

A year ago we had suggested about a system where all the bulk collectors will be tracked until they reach the dumping yard and dispose garbage and they will not be paid until they do so at the designated place. But nothing has been done.

The BBMP has also begun the weekly intensive cleaning at these vulnerable spots where garbage is being dumped illegally, but we do not know how effective this. We have given the BBMP numerous solutions, but everything has to be passed through the council meeting and we do not know when it will happen.
