Logo captures true essence of namma Bengaluru: Priyank Kharge

The logo aims in establishing Brand Bengaluru on the global tourist map and to highlight the rich heritage and culture of the city.

Bengaluru has now joined the group of global cities like New York, Singapore and Melbourne to have its own tourism logo. In order to make the city greener and environment-friendly, the Department of Tourism launched a logo at ‘Namma Bengaluru Habba’ on Sunday. The logo aims in establishing Brand Bengaluru on the global tourist map and to highlight the rich heritage and culture of the city. State Tourism Minister Priyank M. Kharge talks to Abilash Mariswamy  about the government’s plans

In what way do you think the logo and the initiative to promote tourism will be beneficial?
It’s not just a logo, it is identity and this identity should reflect the true essence of what Bengaluru is. We are a 480-year-old city and a global one. We are serious about being global players whether it’s in investments or expenses in the industry. We also need to ensure that we weave a story around the city; this is more to do with an economic activity rather than just a launch of logo. Of course the logo still has some sense of pride; so once it is accepted more by the people, different stake holders will use differently. Tomorrow souvenirs might come out, merchandise might be released and even money might be generated including the local people. This identity will help tourism.

Do you think this will impact the economy as well?
I have 23.5 million people coming in from the airport, if I am able to utilize even 10 per cent of that and make them spend 100 more dollars in my city, then that will be an economic impact of this branding. So it surely has more to do with economic activity of the city.

You know that the historic monument named Krumbigal hall in Lalbagh was demolished? What do you have to say on that?
As a Tourism Minister I am also part of custodian for all these things and it’s our responsibly to conserve. Hopefully with this identity, people will know more about the history, culture, art, literature and beautiful landscape of Bengaluru and help in conserving it as well.

What is your idea on Brand Bengaluru?
For the people of the state it’s a sense of pride and we need to take immense pride in the history we have and safeguard it. And for outsiders it’s an invitation saying that we have a lot of things to offer and this is where they should come.

With this crumbling infrastructure, you think this Brand Bengaluru will help to maintain Bengaluru’s identity that it had? 
Infrastructure is always a cause of concern. We are a growing city, but what prevents you from taking pride in over 480 years of history? Why shouldn’t you take pride in Kadale Santhe, Chitra Santhe and the history and battle of Bengaluru? Many people don’t even know all this happened.

Do you think this branding will help Bengaluru to preserve its history?
Yes, we hope so and that’s the main intention.
