Toms College of Engineering students left in the lurch
So far, the government has not taken any decision to give admission to the students who discontinued the courses they had enrolled for at the college.
KOTTAYAM: Even though more than 80 days have passed since the students of Toms College of Engineering, Mattakara, were assured by the government that those who discontinued their courses from the college citing various reasons will be given admission in other engineering colleges in the state, most of the students were not accommodated in any other college. The students and parents of those studying in Toms College alleged that the government did not take adequate interest in taking steps to accommodate them in other colleges so that they could continue the courses they were enrolled for.
“So far, the government has not taken any decision to give admission to the students who discontinued the courses they had enrolled for at the college. This is despite the assurance by those including the education minister,” said Jetha B. Chalakkal, a second year chemical engineering student of Toms College, who discontinued her BTech course at the college following massive protests from the students against the lack of facilities and alleged harassment meted out to them by the engineering college chairman Tom T. Joseph.
The students and their parents are equally worried that the latest decision of All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) in renewing the affiliation of Toms Engineering College will weaken their chance of getting admission in other colleges. “We were also informed that the AICTE renewing the affiliation to the college will further delay allotment of colleges,” said Shaiji Chacko, the mother of Jetha.
