Kollam: In the latest of the ongoing CPM-CPI tussle at Mukhathala here, AISF state committee member C. Gireesh was brutally assaulted by alleged DYFI workers on Wednesday night. Several hoardings belonging to the CPM were vandalised by the CPI activists who took out a protest march against the attack in Chinnakkada on Thursday. The CPI has also observed a hartal in Thrikkovilvattom panchayat demanding action. Mr Gireesh suffered severe injuries in his mouth and hands inflicted using weapons and is in a hospital. He lost four teeth in the attack that took place around 10.30 pm near Mukhathala village office after kicking him down from his two-wheeler.

The issue between the DYFI and AISF activists took form during the AISF’s district conference held at Mukhathala earlier this month. The posters and flags of the latter were vandalised, against which the CPI and AISF conducted a protest march raising provocative slogans. CPM ward member Satheesh Kumar was subsequently attacked turning the situation worse. A protest march taken out by the DYFI had allegedly unleashed violence on the AISF’s conference venue and a CPI office. The members of both parties had suffered injuries in the attack. The situation went out of control for both, eventually leading to another hartal in Thrikkovilvattom panchayat.
