Kozhikode: Steps to curb mishaps
Commissioner seeks report on accident spots in city.
KOZHIKODE: In the wake of recurring accidents reported from various parts of the city, the city police commissioner has issued a series of directions to curb traffic violations and also create awareness among the public that the accidents have mainly been caused by public negligence. The one major step taken towards this is to identify black spots in the city that indicates accident prone areas.
City Police Commissioner S Kaliraj Mahesh Kumar said, “Black spots are locations that have higher concentration of road accidents. Black spots are identified with the help of scientific analysis of accident data and also examining the nature and cause of accidents”. After identifying these spots, the department would design appropriate low- cost engineering solutions, he said. Some awareness on these spots would help in reducing road accidents and also accident severity in black spot locations, he pointed out.
The Commissioner has asked for a detailed report about the major accident spots in the city and also asked the traffic and Motor Vehicle Department officials to come up with suggestions to curb the increasing accidents in these areas. As per the statistics from the State Government, Kozhikode district has witnessed the highest number of accidents so far compared to the other Districts. In July, more than 25 people have been killed in various accidents in the city limit alone. The traffic department has also been directed to conduct awareness programmes about the negligence of traffic rules.
