Kerala: Mother arrested for torturing 10-year-old
The police were first informed of the boy being tortured by an autorickshaw driver when he came to the house to drop his mother.
Kottayam: Selena Nazeer, the woman who allegedly poured boiling water on her son,10-year-old Naufal, at Adimaly in Idukki district was arrested on Thursday by the Adimaly police. Naufal, son of Selena and Nazeer, was brought to the General Hospital on Tuesday evening and shifted to the Kalamassery Medical College at night. Naufal's family is from Koombanpara in Adimaly.
Younus TA, Circle Inspector of Adimaly told DC that the accused was charged under the provisions of section 75 of the Juvenile Justice Act (punishment for cruelty to child) and would be presented before the Devikulam JFMC. The Child Welfare Committee (CWC) in Idukki on Thursday took Selena Nazeer’s statement for allegedly torturing the child and causing serious burn injuries. CWC Idukki district Chairman PG Gopalakrishnan told DC that Ms Saleena denied the charge. “She instead repeated that the child was attacked by a monkey and that had caused the injuries”.
Mr Gopalakrishnan said that further investigation would be conducted by the police. Meanwhile, the CWC, decided to take Mohammad Haneef, 9, the younger brother of Naufal, and his three-month-old sister into their care. “The CWC will take over the two considering them as children in need of protection. The two children were shifted to the Swadhar shelter home in Thodupuzha”, Mr Goapalakrishnan added. The police also charged a case under the Juvenile justice act against Nazeer, the father of the child who is in jail in a ganja case.
