Free screening of Gandhi draws praise
Screened from August 9 to 21, it provided students from both private and government institutions an opportunity to watch the magnum opus
Hyderabad: The special free screening of Sir Richard Attenborough’s ‘Gandhi’ for school and college students across the state as part of ‘Swatantra Bharat Vajraotsavalu’ has drawn wholesome praise from all over. Screened from August 9 to 21, it provided students from both private and government institutions an opportunity to watch the magnum opus.
The call given by the state government attracted complete support from theatre managements. According to Telangana State Film Development Corporation (TSFDC) officials, the multiple Oscar winning film was screened separately in Telugu and Hindi from 10 am to 1.15 pm. TSFDS paid Rs 10 lakh to the National Film Development Corporation, which owns the film’s rights.
Balgovind Raj Tadla, who owns a cinema hall, said, “When the government came to us with the proposal we were jubilant and accepted it immediately.”
Sridhar Vanka, Telangana State Film Chamber vice-president, said, “The entire screening process was well organised. Students were brought in RTC buses and taken back to their respective schools after they watched the film.”
