Kakinada Smart City wins 2nd rank in Sanitation category
Kakinada city's comprehensive approach to sanitation involved a multi-faceted strategy
Kakinada: Kakinada Smart City secured second rank in the Indian Smart City Award 2022 in the Sanitation category. The award ceremony is scheduled for September 27 in Indore.
The annual Indian Smart City awards celebrates outstanding projects and initiatives undertaken by smart cities across the country. With an emphasis on sustainability, technological integration and community engagement, the awards claim to “serve as a platform to showcase urban solutions that are both visionary and impactful.”
Kakinada municipal commissioner Naganarasimha Rao said Kakinada Smart City's achievement in the sanitation category reflected its commitment to creating a healthier and more livable environment for its residents.
The city's comprehensive approach to sanitation involved a multi-faceted strategy, integrating advanced technologies, public participation and sustainable practices vis-a-vis waste management and sanitation infrastructure.
The city has successfully implemented a robust waste segregation programme at the source, encouraging residents to sort their waste into categories such as organic, recyclable, and hazardous.
This approach not only reduced the environmental impact but also facilitated efficient waste processing.
By leveraging technology, the city has adopted a smart waste collection system that optimised garbage collection routes based on real-time data. This led to a reduction in fuel consumption and emissions, contributing to a greener environment, Rao said.
"Kakinada has implemented decentralized waste treatment units that convert organic waste into compost and biogas. This approach not only reduced the burden on landfills but also generated valuable resources," he added.
The Indian Smart City award is an annual recognition from the central government to acknowledge and celebrate the exceptional efforts and achievements of smart cities.
