Pay Rs 27.50 lakh as compensation to victims: HC.
Chennai: Granting bail to Vikash Anand, a reigning car racing champion, arrested for allegedly mowing down an auto driver by driving a Porsche car in an inebriated condition on September 19 in the city, besides injuring eight others, the Madras high court has directed him to pay Rs 27.50 lakh as compensation to the victims on or before November 10.
Granting bail to Vikash Anand with certain stringent conditions, Justice R.Mala said of the 27.5 lakh, the Vikash Anand should deposit Rs 15 lakh in the fixed deposit in the name of the minor girl who lost her father in the accident, with the principal judge, city civil court as a guardian.
The said fixed deposit shall recur till the minor girl attains majority. “Further, considering the fact that the grand father as well as the father of the petitioner is an advocate by profession, I am confident that they will ensure that the minor girl who had lost her father in the accident and is now under the custody of her relatives will be provided good education and they will bear all the educational expenses, besides the fixed deposit of Rs 15 lakh”, the judge added.
The judge said the petitioner shall pay Rs 2.50 lakh each as compensation to the three persons who sustained grievous injuries and Rs 1 lakh each as compensation to the five persons, who sustained simple injuries.
Out of the 27.5 lakh that has been agreed to be paid as compensation to all the victims, today the petitioner was directed to deposit Rs 7.50 lakh to the credit of the crime before the XVIII Metropolitan Magistrate, Saidapet.
He shall execute a bond for Rs 10,000 with two sureties each for a like sum. He shall report before the court concerned on every Friday at 5.30 pm until further orders, taking into consideration of the fact that the petitioner was a student and undergoing examination, the judge added.
Similarly, the judge also granted bail to Charan Kumar, owner of the Porsche car and a co-passenger, with certain stringent conditions. “The petitioner is ordered to pay Rs 1 lakh each as compensation to the owners of the 12 auto rickshaws that were damaged in the accident on or before November 10, since the petitioner had provided the car to Vikash Anand, who is a student as well as car racer and under the influence of alcohol”, the judge added.
The judge said out of the Rs 12 lakh, today he was directed to deposit a sum of Rs 2 lakh to the credit of the crime before the XVIII Metropolitan Magistrate, Saidapet. He should execute a bond for Rs 10,000 with two sureties each for a like sum and report before the court concerned daily at 10.30 a.m. until further orders, the judge added.
