Kozhikode: National Cadet Corps' 250-km sailing expedition flagged off

KOZHIKODE: Driven by the spirit of adventure, 30 cadets of  Naval National Cadet Corps embarked on a six-day sailing expedition which was flagged off at Vengali Boat house here on Tuesday. It was organised by   Kerala Naval Unit (9) NCC to provide practical knowledge of seamanship and navigation to the cadets.
The trip included selected cadets from six colleges in Kozhikode, Malappuram and Palakkad who set out to complete an arduous 250 km distance.

It was flagged off by Brigadier Rajaram at 10.30 a.m. and the cadets are accompanied by two associate NCC officers and two naval instructors. “We had to ensure the safety of the cadets and hence all precautions were  taken. Swimming tests were conducted prior to the expedition and shore support will be provided. A rescue boat along with road support will  accompany them to provide assistance” said Lt.Col Purshottam, Commanding Officer of 5 Kerala Naval Unit, Changanassery.

The aim of the sailing expedition is to instil  a spirit of adventure and build up mental and physical toughness among the cadets. “We also wish to develop camaraderie, stamina,  alertness and ability to integrate as a team of disciplined  body for facing tough situations,” added Sajish, 9 Kerala Naval NCC unit instructor. The team will arrive at Payyoli on  Thursday and conduct a one-day Swachh Bharat Abhiyan awareness camp at Kunjali Marakkar high school. "The team will be en route to the starting point on Sunday morning.  It is the first time a group of girl cadets has joined the 9 Kerala Naval unit expedition showcasing  the need to give equal opportunity to the females  in all fields,” Purushottam added.
