Chennai: Close on the heels of the Union Government increasing the Dearness Allowance (DA) for its employees, Chief Minister M K Stalin announced a four per cent DA hike for State Government staff and teachers, which will go up from the present 42 per cent to 47 per cent with effect from July 1, 2023.

The move that would benefit 16 lakh State government employees, teachers, pensioners and family pensioners and cost the exchequer Rs 2546.16 crore per year was part of the efforts to safeguard the welfare of its employees who jointly work with the government in implementing its welfare policies, an official press release said.

Since the government had acceded to the demand of the government staff and teachers to enhance the DA whenever the Union Government did it for its employees, it made the latest announcement, despite the earlier government leaving the State in a financial crisis and debt burden, the release said.
