KOZHIKODE: The Malaparamba  aided upper primary  school protection committee’s protest seeking the  withdrawal of the government order to close down the school entered the 16th day on Tuesday. The protesters have received  the support of over 200 members of the Confederation of Residents Associations in Kozhikode district and Kerala State Service Pensioners Union.

The management had wanted to demolish the school, where over 100 children studied, and sell the property. The High Court had  passed a verdict three months ago favouring the management and the DPI issued the order on April 12.

Following this, over 300 local people started an indefinite agitation to stop the demolition. Earlier, they had staged  a two-day strike. “We have not so far received a positive sign from the authorities for the protection of the school,” said Mr R.K. Iravil,   member of the  protection committee and the Hindi faculty of  the school. “Following  our meeting with Chief Minister Oommen Chandy during his visit here, he  had signed an appeal to the  High Court seeking to stop its order for the school closure,” he added.

An amount of Rs 19 lakh raised by the public had been  spent for reconstructing  the institution. “Taking into consideration the feelings of the public and the children studying here, the government should take back its order,”  Mr Iravil added.
