HYDERABAD: Heavy rains and strong winds took the life of an eight-month-old girl on Tuesday night when a roof collapsed on her, killing her in her sleep.

Strong gusts caused bricks from a neighbouring wall to fall on Jeevanika’s home in Rahmathnagar, which was covered with an asbestos roof. The roof cracked and fell, crushing the infant to death.

The sudden rain and winds disrupted the lives of many people in the city. As the downpour continued, the electricity was cut off, forcing people to suffer throughout the night. Some areas power at 2 am, others at 4 am. Winds toppled trees throughout the city during the storm, and authorities cleaned the uprooted trees on Wednesday morning.

On Thursday, IMD-Hyderabad issued an orange alert for Hyderabad.
Light to moderate rain or thunder showers with gusty winds (30- 40 kmph) and hailstorms are expected to occur Thursday evening or night.
Heavy rains continued until Wednesday morning, impacting traffic flow and electricity supplies in a number of areas. The severe rains pounded the city’s roads, uprooted trees, and caused inundation and deluge in low-lying areas. A large tree fell on the ground between Suchitra and Bowenpally in Defence land, with no casualties reported. Another tree fell on the ground a few metres from the Metuguda Metro Rail station. Water that had gushed into several low-lying areas was cleared by Wednesday morning. Several areas in the city suffered power outages on Tuesday night, which was restored at 8 am in some areas on Wednesday. Starting from Diamond Point, Alwal and its neighbourhoods had no power. The residents had no respite until 2 am on Wednesday. A similar situation was experienced by residents of Macha Bolaram, RK Puram, and the surrounding areas of Military Hospital in Bolarum. The IMD — Hyderabad stated that heavy rainfall was witnessed in Malkajgiri and Narayanpet districts  as well in Jangaon, Khammam, Kamareddy, Medak, Mahbubnagar, Siddipet, Vikarabad Y. Bhuvanagiri, and Warangal districts of Telangana state. There were also sporadic hailstorms in the districts of Adilabad, Jagtiyal, Karimnagar, Medak, Nalgonda, Peddapalli, Rajanna Sircilla, Rangareedy, Siddipet, and Vikarabad.
