SALEM: Tension prevailed at the government hospital here on Wednesday for a while, as relatives of a pregnant woman picked up an argument with hospital staff over the gender of the new born baby born to the family.

It is said that one Venkatesh of Kaadayaampatty in the district, had admitted his wife Gomathy, for delivery at the government hospital, on Tuesday.
On Wednesday morning, the hospital staff informed Venkatesh that a caesarian had to be performed and got some consent papers signed by him. After a while, the staff informed Venkatesh that a baby boy was born.
As the family was rejoicing at the birth of the boy, some hospital staff again approached Venkatesh to get his signature for family planning procedure. At this juncture, Venkatesh was told that his child was a baby girl, and the family got infuriated over the confusion.
Following this, despite the apologies of the hospital staff and them trying to convince the family, the relatives of Gomathi sought confirmation tests on the baby, to identify her parentage.
The hospital staff tried their best to convince the family members, and later the issue was settled. The incident created a flutter in the Obstetrics department of the hospital for a while.
