Mariamma’s custodial death unfortunate: DGP Mahendar Reddy
Mahendar Reddy calls on her children in Khammam; vows action against guilty
KHAMMAM: Director-General of Police M. Mahender Reddy has contended that the custodial death of a Dalit woman, Mariamma, at the Addagudur police station was an unfortunate incident.
“A departmental enquiry into the incident is underway and serious action would be taken against all police officials found guilty,” he said.
After getting details about the incident, the DGP met her children Uday Kiran, Sujatha and Swapna here on Sunday.
Uday Kiran is still undergoing treatment in the Khammam hospital for injuries he sustained when the Addagudur police allegedly beat him up. People were surprised that the top cop was personally trying to get information from the victims.
“As part of friendly policing, we have brought various reforms in the department. Incidents like the one at the Addagudur police station are occurring while the officials are trying to reach the targets in checking crimes,” he said.
The police should keep in mind the value of lives while maintaining law and order, checking crimes and catching criminals.
“In internal meetings too, we advise our officials to get information from the accused by following techniques during the investigation process and not to violate law to prove cases in courts. The Mariamma custodial death is definitely painful to all of us,” he said.
Mahendar Reddy also visited Konigerla police station and enquired about the incident where Mariamma was beaten while in the lock-up.
