Chennai: Miscreants who broke into the State-run Music University vice-chancellor’s office in the varsity campus in R.A Puram, left threat notes to the VC, besides ransacking the office, three other rooms and the canteen.

The incident came to light on Monday morning after the VC, Veena. E. Gayathri received a call from the campus watchman Shanmugam on Monday around 7.30 am, about her office and other rooms having been forced open and the lights being on.

Two notes - one written in a chart paper, left in Gayathri’s room of Gayathri and the other written on the unprinted side of a film poster and left in the general administration room - threatened to kill Gayathri. The notes were written in English and in Tamil conveying the message that whoever left the note was intending to kill Gayathri.

The notes were also signed with an illegible signature. A WiFi router installed in Gayathri’s room was damaged and the miscreants also inflicted damage on the steel bureau, besides strewing files all over other room. They had also scraped off the image of Gayathri in a portrait photo in which she was seen posing with the Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa.

Gayathri alerted the cops who pressed the fingerprint bureau to collect usable prints from the scene of crime. “It appears they were looking for something. There were no valuables stored in my office. We also don’t know whether they got what they wanted,” Gayathri said.

Gayathri maintained that she strongly believed the students of the varsity had nothing to do with it. She said she was convinced that someone who knew the campus like the back of their hand must have done it.

“We are moving the offices to another block from the present block. Since the migration is in process, we have also shifted the CCTV surveillance system to the other block,” she said.

Sources indicated that the music maestro had sacked at least 6 people in the past 3 months since that was the only way to take disciplinary proceedings due to the temporary nature of all the posts in the institution.
