KASARGOD: Central University of Kerala (CUK) will shut down its rented hostels with the opening of two new buildings on its Periye campus next month. The new hostels for men and women can accommodate 420 students. The CUK already has a women’s hostel housing 160 students. Now 580 students will get accommodation in these three facilities. HRD minister for state Dr Mahendra Nath Pandey will open the buildings on October 8.

CUK vice-chancellor Dr G. Gopakumar said the university had arranged all modern amenities for students there. “Facility-wise, ours is one of the best in the country. We have arranged all facilities including Wi-Fi. The hostels are barrier free with physically challenged students having special amenities,” he told DC. After the inaugural function, the minister will have an interaction with the faculty members and students on the relevance of the higher education in technical development.

The CUK is expected to complete the construction of eight academic blocks here by June next year. “Once the work is over, all other campuses except Thiruvalla and Thiruvananthapuram will come under one roof,” the VC said. The CUK is presently spread across Kasargod, Kuniya and Padannakkad campuses in the district apart from the main campus. The CUK is also readying for the maiden NAAC visit October 24-27. Ahead of this, the varsity will conduct a mock visit by a team headed by Kashmir University vice- chancellor.
