Settiampatti villagers against funeral for slain naxal leader

KRISHNAGIRI: The Settiampatti villagers in Krishnagiri district have decided not to allow the funeral of the slain naxal leader, killed in a special police anti-naxal operation in Kerala two days back.
On Thursday, 60-year-old D. Kuppuraj (alias) Moorthi and his associates were killed while they moved inside the Nilambur reserved forest of Mallapuram district in Kerala.
His relatives decided to conduct the funeral for him in his native Settiampatti village. But, the local villagers are against the idea.
“We will not allow his body entering our village,” 50-year-old K. Muthusamy, the village headman said. “This decision was taken because the dead person is not a martyr but criminal,” he said, adding, “Kuppuraj’s body, if buried in our village will bring shame to our place.”
The headman insisted: “Let his relatives hold the funeral at the place where he lived from childhood; keep the body at the entrance of the village and conduct the funeral in the burial ground along the Krishnagiri-Chennai highway.”
