Hyderabad: A six-year-old boy was critically injured in an attack by a stray dog in Nandi Musalaiguda, under Bahadurpura police station, on Sunday. He is currently undergoing treatment at Niloufer Hospital, where his condition is stable.

Dr Ram Subba Reddy, senior doctor at Niloufer Hospital, said: “He was admitted on Sunday and was critical then. He is recovering slowly after suturing. He should recover completely in less than a week.”

In the incident — that was captured on CCTV cameras and a two-minute clip of which went viral on social media — the aggressive dog can be seen overpowering the boy, pinning him to the ground and dragging him for several feet.

Upon hearing the boy’s cries, neighbours rushed to his aid, shooed away the dog and admitted him to the hospital.

The incident reignited concerns and fear among residents over the frequency of stray dog attacks as it has increased in recent months, with children bearing the brunt in most encounters.

Residents of the area, following the incident, called for authorities to take effective measures to address the issue by coming up with effective strategies to ensure public safety.

Bahadurpura police station house officer Anil Kumar told Deccan Chronicle that no complaint was lodged into the incident. “Doctors at the hospital called us up to inform us about the issue. Following the incident, GHMC authorities reached the site and cleared all strays in the area,” he said.
