KOZHIKODE: Calicut University may soon get a fire and rescue department station in its campus. The syndicate meeting held on Monday constituted a committee to study the state government proposal in this regard. It was also decided to give the increased fellowship amount to scholars with retrospective effect from June 1, 2016.

Earlier this month, the varsity hiked the fellowship amount. A junior scholar will get Rs 11,000 and senior fellow will get Rs 13,000 according to the revised system. Earlier it was Rs 4,750 and Rs 6,000 respectively. M. Phil students will get Rs 4,000 per month instead of Rs 1,500. The meeting also witnessed clashes between the UDF and the LDF members over Peon/ watchman appointments.

While the UDF members demanded appointments be made on the basis of the rank list, the LDF protested saying that the rank list was wrong and pointed out that the police inquiry was going on.   VC Dr K. Mohammed Basheer intervened and said that the appointments would be made considering the marks in the written test. The LDF demand for conducting Presidential style elections for the students' union was rejected as the majority favoured the parliamentary system. The syndicate decided to take legal action against those researchers who had not completed research work despite receiving the fellowship amount.
